Stylistic variation
How can visual patterns associated with style be examined without reducing archaeological interpretation to automated classification?
ISTANBUL UNIVERSITY / PHD IN ARCHAEOLOGY / IN PROGRESS
Exploring stylistic variation in Attic red-figure vase painting through explainable artificial intelligence and image analysis.
01 / FOCUS
My doctoral research in archaeology at Istanbul University examines how computational image analysis and explainable artificial intelligence can contribute to the study of stylistic variation in Attic red-figure vase painting.
The research brings archaeological and art-historical interpretation into dialogue with computational methods. Rather than treating a model’s classification as an independent archaeological conclusion, it considers how expert annotation and interpretable visual evidence may support the investigation of artistic style.
The broader methodological question is how computational patterns can be made transparent, critically evaluated, and meaningfully related to archaeological knowledge.
02 / RESEARCH DIRECTION
How can visual patterns associated with style be examined without reducing archaeological interpretation to automated classification?
How can expert annotation and art-historical reasoning remain integral to computational analysis?
How can the evidence used by image-analysis models be interpreted, evaluated and communicated to researchers?
